The external lightning protection
system
The external lightning protection system consists of
air-termination systems, down-conductors and the
earthing system.1 Air-termination systems
Air termination systems are the part the lightning
protection system that protect the building structure
from direct lightning strikes. With these components able to
perform the functions required it, namely intercept-
ing direct lightning strikes, discharging the lightning
current earth and distributing the ground.
Air-termination systems can comprised any com-
bination the following components:
• Air-termination rods (including free-standing rods)
• Catenary wires
• Meshed conductors
