In practice, MacAdam ellipses are often
used give users idea how far individ-
ual LED modules differ with respect colour
perception.
By using specific binning groups, colour
and brightness tolerances not just the
light emitted individual luminaires, but
also visible luminous surfaces are
reduced minimum. The colour difference between
wide-angle luminaires with high luminous flux
levels (replacing fluorescent lamps) consid-
ered excellent MacAdam ellipses. Thus, illuminated
surfaces and light emitting panels lumi-
naires are given uniform appearance. This
selection especial
ly important when it
comes “single LED” products and applica-
tions with maximum white light quality such
as museums.

White light quality and binning
In the production LED chips, LEDs of
diffe
rent production batches have different
properties with respect intensity, colour
temperature, colour location, with respect
to forward voltage.
The properties each individual LED are
measured after manufacturing and allocated
to group showing the same features
