Edison had always seen military applications for his
inventions. The first military customers
for electricity were modern navies who used isolated plants to
light and power their iron warships. Electricity offered many opportunities this
field: could used weapon— sprays water linked
with high voltage alternating currents, for example; means
of power; and for communications. formed company with
Gardiner Sims, (the Edison-Sims Electric Torpedo Company) to
design and manufacture submarines, torpedoes, and other naval
weapons. The twentieth
century opened atmosphere international tension and
rearmament. This company credited with the design the first
remote-controlled weapon, torpedo powered electricity and
guided through elaborate cable system. Edison had special
interest electrically-powered torpedoes and experimented on
them the West Orange laboratory. ^
